Inside the Annual Albums of Four Inspiring Customers

The days are long but the years are short. No month gives meaning to this adage quite like the month of January. The month when the holiday high fades away, the bleak days of winter settle in, and the passing of another year weighs on us. Sure, it’s a month marked by shiny new beginnings — new resolutions and new habits — but on our calendars, it’s marked by nature’s cue to slow down and reflect.

Taking time to look back reminds us of how far we’ve come, of who we were then and who we are now. It reveals how much our children have grown or how much our home has changed. It reminds us that rarely is a year just one thing. It is a mingling of highs and lows, of seemingly average days and once-in-a-lifetime days, of prideful moments and disappointing moments. And only when we slow down to reflect on it all do we begin to see clearly the individual threads — all woven together to create another meaningful chapter in our life story.

This year we thought, what better source of inspiration for documenting your year than the real annual albums of Artifact Uprising customers? We caught up with four of them — and here, we’re sharing their meaningful chapters, along with their tips, tricks, and reasons for putting their moments in print. So whether this is your first stab at chronicling the year with photos or one of many in a long-standing practice, we hope these customers inspire you to slow down, reflect, and make permanence of your year in print.

01

Hillary H. Prints Her Year on Film

Customer Hillary H. and her partner filled an annual album exclusively with their film photography from the year. She says limiting their album to film is an easy and artful way to narrow down their image selection (since narrowing down from all their photos feels nearly impossible).

What book did you choose and why?
“I opt for the Photo-Wrapped Hardcover each year because I like that the cover can showcase a photographic narrative before someone even opens the book. And I like that the quality of the book speaks to the kind of situations it will be in, passing through many hands, like a future child spilling over the pages to study our story or friends flipping through whimsically at a party.”

Why do you print an annual album?
“I print albums to make the memories with my partner more tangible. Our digital photo collections are vast and beautiful in their own way but don't have the same warm rituals attached to them like physical photo albums do. These albums encourage slowness and lingering in a way that my digital albums don’t.”

What is your advice for creating an annual album?
“Think outside the bounds of the album templates. Using AU templates as a base, I customized my book cover and pages to mold to my own graphic style which results in this bespoke artifact. I also love to leverage empty space and brevity. Sometimes one photo can tell an even richer story than several from the same event or subject.”

02

Alejandra M. Prints Everyday Family Moments

Customer and mother Alejandra M. fills her annual album with all the little adventures and everyday moments her family of four shares throughout the year. She chose the Softcover Photo Book because its casual paperback feel is perfect for a growing collection.

Why do you print an annual album?
“I want to have physical copies of some of my favorite pictures of the year, and I am excited about sharing them with my kids when they are older.”

How often do you flip through your yearly books?
“I look at them every couple of months. My little ones love to see the pictures and talk about fun memories.”

What is your advice for creating an annual album?
“I go through the photos I’ve taken throughout the year in chronological order and favorite the standouts. Even though I don’t use words, I always make sure the photos tell a story.”

03

Fabian M. Prints His Daughter’s First Year

Customer Fabian M.’s annual album tradition started 12 years ago, when he and his wife wanted to document life with their first dog, Lucy. Now, instead of Lucy being the focus of their annual recap, it’s their new daughter, Max. His Everyday Photo Book captures her first trip around the sun.

How do you curate which photos to include in the book?
“To me it's all about telling a narrative. If someone was to pick this book up off our shelves, will they get to know us better after flipping through one? I hope so. We hope they see where we've lived, who we've spent our year with, and what fun adventures we've been on. It's a little bit of everything. And we don't linger too long on any one day.”

Any other tips for creating an annual album?
“Have fun with it! In previous years I've included little things other than photographs, as well. Like sketches of my dog Lucy or hilarious and heartwarming text messages from family. Oh, and try to keep your images candid! I feel like candid images of you and your family just living and not posing makes it all feel more timeless years later.”

How often do you flip through your yearly books?
“We look through them all the time! At least once a month. And what’s really special is the Softcover Books from the previous years are all in our daughter's room, and she loves going through them, pointing at the dogs and saying their names over and over. One day she'll see those and understand our story from before she was even a twinkle in our eye.”

04

Jessica P. Prints the Seasons

Customer Jessica P. organizes her annual album according to the seasons. She chose the Layflat Photo Album, which features new interior layouts with new image and text options — and her colorful divider pages are beautiful examples of how to design an album with both textual and photographic narratives. The thick, layflat pages elegantly capture both the milestones and the everyday moments with her husband and two little boys.

What moments did you choose to include in your annual album?
“Travel, fall festivities, a baby shower, my life with children, traditions, and more — a little bit of everything!”

Print Your Year

Take it from those who print annual albums and revisit them often: There’s something special about holding a year’s worth of moments in your hands. Begin your own practice of reflection — pausing to revisit the milestones, emotions, and changes that shaped your family’s year. Then remember it all with a photo book designed to last a lifetime.
