I've known that I wanted to be an artist for as long as I can remember. Growing up as an only child with two hardworking parents, I learned to entertain myself with drawing and spent many hours imagining new worlds for myself in the woods and "secret" hideouts along the river by our rural log-cabin home. Not having a wide range of opportunities to study art formally near my town, I primarily taught myself to paint, pouring over a dusty book that had belonged to my grandmother of paintings by the old masters. My photography has always grown hand-in-hand with painting as I study my subjects through the lens and experiment with capturing motion. A Nikon FM10 that my dad gave me when I was twelve was my first real introduction to photography and with it I shot nearly every square inch of the property we lived on. I quickly learned to be watchful for nature’s subtle changes as each season came along and to be aware of the light conditions throughout each day. Instagram has inspired me to continue to challenge myself to capture beauty in my every-day and to not take for granted the simple moments that, preserved in a photograph, can bring so much joy when shared with others.
